Types of Glasses

Glasses
Glasses are the most common optical device designed to improve human vision and assist with optical imperfections of the eye (corrective glasses) or protect the eyes from various harmful influences (protective glasses).

Lorgnette
A lorgnette (French lornette) is folding glasses with a handle. Used since the 18th century in aristocratic circles. The lorgnette was attached to a chain.

Monocle
A monocle (French monocle, from Greek monos - single and Latin oculus - eye) is an eyeglass lens with or without a frame, inserted into the eye socket. Quite inconspicuous compared to glasses. Often lenses were inserted into a frame, for example, gold. The monocle turned into a luxury item. If the lorgnette was the prerogative of aristocrats, the monocle was worn mostly by officers and diplomats. This variety of glasses disappeared at the beginning of the 20th century, after World War I. In the reproductions presented to your attention, you can see how popular the monocle was in its time. Agree, holding the lens with your hand or constantly squinting with one eye is not very convenient. I wonder if the habit of squinting one eye persisted for monocle owners in everyday life?

Pince-nez
A pince-nez (French pince-nez from pincer - to pinch and nez - nose) is glasses without temples, held on the nose by means of a spring compressing the bridge of the nose.
